From Advent to Epiphany

Behind the Map: How This Route Is Drawn

An independent guide to one season, written for families and curious readers who want to know how the rest of the world celebrates.

Why a route?

Most guides to world Christmas traditions are arranged as an alphabet of countries. We found that this hides the most interesting thing about the season: its rhythm. Lucia and Las Posadas, Wigilia and Simbang Gabi, Befana and Genna all fall on particular days for particular reasons. Laying them out as stops on a calendar shows how the same weeks take shape differently from place to place.

How we research

  • Primary and institutional sources

We check dates and histories against museums, national cultural institutions, church calendars and established reference works before publishing.

  • People who keep the tradition

Wherever possible we ask people who grew up with a custom to read what we have written. Their corrections are the most valuable ones we receive.

  • Respect over spectacle

Many of these customs are acts of faith. We describe them with the care their communities would expect and avoid treating them as mere curiosities.

Corrections

Traditions vary by region, family and generation, so a description that is right in one town may be wrong in the next. If you spot an error, post us a letter or email [email protected]. We review every correction and update pages with a note where the change matters.
